Deer Lakes’ McCaskey selected to participate in Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) leadership program
WEST DEER, Pa. – Deer Lakes High School sophomore Jake McCaskey has been selected to participate in the Pennsylvania-West chapter (Region B) of the Hugh O’Brian Youth (HOBY) Leadership Training Program, June 10-12 at Washington & Jefferson College in Washington, Pa.
Annual HOBY programs are conducted throughout the United States and serve local and international high school students with the goal of inspiring and developing young leaders to become adults committed to a life dedicated to volunteerism, leadership, service and innovation.
Deer Lakes High School choir earns top honors in the Music in the Parks Festival in Florida
WEST DEER, Pa. – The Deer Lakes High School choir performed very well this weekend, earning a first place score of 88.5 and an "excellent" rating at the Music in the Parks Festival held in Clearwater Beach, Florida, and Busch Gardens in Tampa.
The students were also commended for their exemplary conduct during the festival.

DEER LAKES EDUCATION ASSOCIATION’S EDUCATION SCHOLARSHIP
The Deer Lakes Education Association has established a monetary award for a student or students entering the teaching profession. We, as an association, promote public education and encourage young people to enter the field.
Kids of Steel
In conjunction with the Pittsburgh Marathon, and under the leadership of Mr. Ron Nichols of Curtisville Primary Center and Mrs. Tracy Fletcher of East Union Intermediate Center, More than 100 students participated in the Kids of Steel program, a health and nutrition program framed around exercise and good eating habits.
Over the course of four months, students are to run for 25 miles and log their accomplishments. Their final 1.2 miles of the marathon (a full marathon is 26.2 miles) was run together in a race downtown.
Deer Lakes’ students joined 3,800 students from 80 Kids of Steel participating schools at the May 1 race. The course started at PNC Park in the North Side and ended on the Boulevard of the Allies, just past Stanwix Street.

Empty Soup Bowls
The Deer Lakes Art and Family Consumer Science departments are sponsoring the Annual Empty Bowls Soup Sale fundraiser Wednesday, May 12 from 6-8 p.m. in the Family Consumer Science wing.
Participants will be able to choose a beautiful hand made bowl from the 3D Art classes to keep, and choose from a delicious selection of soups from the Cooking Classes.

Hutchinson Finalist for America's Homecoming Queen
Deer Lakes senior Maureen Hutchinson was recently selected as a national finalist in the America’s Homecoming Queen competition.
Hutchinson was selected from 10 finalists in the statewide competition in Lancaster and will now have the opportunity to represent Pennsylvania at the national competition this July in Nashville, Tenn.
Distinguished Alumni Awards 2016
On Friday, Deer Lakes School District recognized five graduates who have gained recognition for outstanding accomplishments in their fields of endeavor at an induction ceremony and banquet that was held in the high school.
This year's inductees were Dr. Robert W. Kelly (’64), Michael O’Hare (’70), Susan Palmer Oliver (’76), Melinda Roeder (’93) and Deborah Stanko Zacherl (’69).
Deer Lakes’ Nicholson, Smail named AW Beattie’s 2016 class valedictorian, co-salutatorian
WEST DEER, Pa. – Deer Lakes senior Casey Nicholson (Early Childhood Education) has been named the AW Beattie Career Center’s the 2016 class valedictorian. Madison Smail (Automotive Collision Technology) has also been named co-salutatorian
AW Beattie Career Center’s Senior Recognition Night is May 25, 2016 at Shaler Area High School.
Deer Lakes representatives excel at Pennsylvania State Speech and Debate Tournament
Sophomore, Justin Skirda (Radio Announcing); juniors, Josh Solomon (Impromptu Speaking) and Sam Smallwood (Congressional Debate); and senior Dan Greer (Prose Reading) recently represented Deer Lakes at the annual Pennsylvania State Speech and Debate tournament at Susquehanna University.
The four young men competed against the best the state has to offer, and returned with a handful of honors.

Earlier today, Deer Lakes alum Michael O'Hare ('70) announced that he will donate $20,000 to DLHS alums as part of the the Dody and Stel O'Hare Memorial Scholarship. The award, which honors O'Hare's late parents, will be split among the 12 Deer Lakes alums who will be attending Slippery Rock University in the fall.
O'Hare has now donated $80,000 in scholarship money to Deer Lakes grads to honor the memory of his late parents and his first wife, Gerry O'Hare.?
The Dancing with the Teachers Event originally scheduled for Tuesday, April 26that 7:00 p.m. has been rescheduled for Tuesday, May 24th at 7:00 p.m. in the high school auditorium.

Deer Lakes Middle School’s Mini Dance Marathon to benefit local charity, Team Tassy
WEST DEER, Pa. – Deer Lakes Middle School student council will host its annual Mini Dance Marathon from 6-10 p.m. on Friday, May 13 in the middle school gymnasium. The four-hour Carnival themed event will feature refreshments, host theme rooms, a photo booth, inflatable games, face painting, and other interactive games and activities.
Deer Lakes School District Annual Kennywood Picnic
Deer Lakes School District's annual picnic will be held at Kennywood Park on Tuesday, June 21, 2016. Ride All Day passes are $26 and will be on school at each school on Wednesday, May 11, 2016.
Deer Lakes High School Spring Scholarship Blood Drive
Give the gift of life at the Deer Lakes High School Spring Scholarship Blood Drive in the high school gymnasium from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, April 21.
We must have at least 50 donors to qualify for a scholarship for a member of the Class of 2016.
Donors that are 16 years-old must have a parent-signed permission form. Please see Mrs. McCaskey by no later than April 19 to sign up for the event.
Deer Lakes High School Course Offerings
In March, Deer Lakes High School students were offered the opportunity to get a head start on the scheduling process for next year during a course offering presentation for the 2016-17 school year.
