Deer Lakes Middle School supports grades six, seven and eight. With 17 classrooms and four science rooms, it features two full service, networked computer labs, each with 30 workstations. Other educational features include a family consumer sciences area, art/technology education area, art and music section, speech and language rooms, math support and reading areas, a comprehensive library-learning resource center, and life-skills instructional support areas.
The Middle School features a Family Consumer Science and Technology Education wing. Two state-of-the-art Computer Labs for large group use and four modern Science Labs are provided for technology education. A large gymnasium with additional floor space and stage area makes it ideal for assemblies. The gym is adjoined by Art and Band facilities.
The features include a technology backbone second to none. Students have access to computers in every room as well as a host of other tools to assist them in their learning. Each classroom, lab and teacher area has access to the building's network for communication within the school. Students have access to the Internet for educational purposes with security filtering provided by the Allegheny Intermediate Unit.
All students are offered an engaging curriculum by a staff that will challenge them in the traditional areas of mathematics, science, language arts/reading and social studies. High academic expectations are maintained and promoted through the use of time-honored instructional practices as well as effective modern strategies.
Exploratory instruction in both Spanish and French is offered to seventh graders. Foreign language is offered as an elective at the 8th grade level. Students can choose to take either Spanish or French.
A Unified Arts program provides a wealth of opportunity for students to explore and develop their talents in a number of areas. These include art, instrumental music and choral music. Family Consumer Science allows students to investigate and hone their talents in the culinary and fashion arts. Technology Education introduces students to a variety of traditional and modern mechanical systems incorporating introductory mathematics and science principles.
Computer instruction is offered to all students. As students begin to develop more advanced levels in their personal operation of computers, they will be encouraged to use that knowledge in other subject areas.
Health and Physical Education will focus on the development of good personal habits in relation to diet, hygiene and exercise. Students can utilize what they learn in physical education to participate in an Intramural program that encourages all students to get involved in some form of in-house competition in a variety of activities.
A special needs program focuses on the individual needs of students enrolled in special education. To ensure their success, support is offered in the regular classroom as well as a resource room based on the child's specific needs.
