Deer Lakes Board of School Directors Reorganization
The Deer Lakes Board of School Directors held its annual reorganization meeting on Monday, December 7, 2009 at Curtisville Primary Center.

The Board welcomed re-elected director Mrs. Lisa E. Merlo and newly elected directors Mr. Michael J. Coletta, Mr. James F. McCaskey, Ms. Clara Salvi.

Serving as officers are President Mrs. Lisa E. Merlo and Vice- President Mr. Michael F. Cavanaugh. Mr. Gary W. Torick will serve as board Treasurer. Legislative Chairperson to PSBA's Legislative Action Program is Mrs. Marianna Stoneburner. The board voted to retain Mr. Raymond F. Sekula as school district solicitor.

In other business, the board approved the dates for agenda meetings and regular meetings. The Deer Lakes Board of Education holds its regular meetings on the third Monday of each month. Agenda meetings are held on the Wednesday preceding the regular meeting. Both agenda and all regular monthly Board Meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. and are held in the Curtisville Primary Center, 1715 Saxonburg Blvd., Tarentum, PA.

The dates of any special meetings are posted at the administration office; all school buildings and published in the local papers.

About The Board
The Deer Lakes Board of School Directors and Administration work in partnership to provide a sound system of education in the Deer Lakes School District.

The Board of School Directors is made up of nine citizens elected to serve four-year terms. Pennsylvania law requires that board members be 18 years of age, live in the district at least one year, and not hold another public office. State law does not limit the number of terms a member may serve. School board members are not paid for their services to the community.

The Board is responsible for exercising educational leadership and drafting policies for the operation of local schools; employing and evaluating a superintendent; authorizes the appointment of personnel, approving curriculum and adopting textbooks, securing funds for district operational needs, expressing the views of the community in matters affecting education, and communicating the district's educational goals and programs.

The Deer Lakes Board of Education holds its regular meetings on the third Monday of each month. Agenda meetings are held on the second Wednesday of each month. Both Agenda and all regular monthly Board Meetings begin at 7:00 p.m. and are held in the Curtisville Primary Center multi-purpose room. Superintendent of Schools
Dr. Dean Casello is the chief executive officer of the board and is responsible to administer board policies concerning the operation of the schools. He addresses the board regarding the needs and programs of the schools. The Superintendent recommends board action relating to personnel, selection of textbooks and instructional materials, development of curriculum, school plant planning and maintenance, and financial affairs.

Your presence gives board members the advantage of community interest and opinions. Board members benefit from your comments and questions. Therefore, at each meeting an opportunity is provided for those who want to be heard. If you have a detailed question, or one that requires extensive research, you may wish to send it in advance to the Superintendent of Schools.

• Introduce yourself by standing and stating your name and place of residence.
• Present your ideas, concerns, suggestions, and/or commendations to the Board in a clear, concise manner.
• A written copy of your comments would assist the Board and would provide a record of your statements.
• Remember that the Board welcomes your ideas and will carefully consider them in deliberating an issue.

* August 2010 meetings will take place at Curtisville Primary Center in the all purpose room.
* September 2010 through December 2010 meetings will take place in the High School library.
