Outgoing school board members honored

The legacy of school board service is firmly embedded in the history of our nation and its commitment to public education.  The Pennsylvania School boards Association, founded in 1895, has a rich history as the first school boards association established in the United States.

Since 1983, long-term school directors have been honored across the state by the association at local school board meetings.  School directors are recognized for years of service from eight to 44 years.

In November, Deer Lakes School Board members, Mr. James McCaskey, Mrs. Lisa Merlo, and Ms. Clara Salvi, were each recognized for their collective 25 plus years of service at the regularly scheduled school board voting meeting.  The trio, each of whom is retiring from the board in December, were presented certificates adding them to the PSBA “Honor Roll of School Board Service.”

“Throughout their respective tenures on the Deer Lakes Board of School Directors, they have consistently demonstrated dedication and commitment to the students of our great school and community,” said Dr. Janell Logue-Belden, the district’s superintendent.  “It gives me great pleasure to recognize each of them on behalf of Deer Lakes School District and PSBA.”

School directors today have a challenging job in our complex society.  They must give more of their personal time to meet the increasing demands placed on them.

The Honor Roll Program is the association’s way of saying thank you to those unpaid volunteers who exemplify statesmanship by giving unselfishly of their time and talents for the future benefit of public education.  We commend all board members for giving back to their local communities and for advocating on behalf of all students served.
