English Festival Honorees
Deer Lakes High School sophomores (from left) Pietro Porco, Mairead Clements, Madison Madine and Kelli Galbraith were recently formally recognized at the 2017 Western Pennsylvania Council of English Teachers (WPCTE) English Festival Luncheon, held at Seton-La Salle High School in Baldwin Township, Pa.
Teams composed of up to five students worked together throughout last school year to read and discuss six thematically-related texts selected by the WPCTE. In addition to participating in Festival Day activities based upon these texts, students were also required to submit advanced individual and team work/projects prior to the festival.
The Deer Lakes students, who were awarded certificates and cash prizes for their team and individual performances, earned a spot in the coveted winner’s circle after placing fourth of 75 teams. The quartet won its literary events in “Insight,” “Talk Show,” and “Trivia.” Galbraith and Porco each also took home top individual honors in the “Featured Author” essay contest.
Deer Lakes, which has participated in the program for the past 17 years, sent seven high school and middle school teams to this year’s competition, which was held at Duquesne University in May.
