Deer Lakes seniors Diana Navarete (Gold, Job Interview) Fallon Persinger (Silver, Pin Design) and have each placed first and second respectively in their competition areas of the statewide SkillsUSA competition, April 11-12 in Hershey
The young ladies each placed first in their respective competition areas of the District 8 SkillsUSA competition at A.W. Beattie Career Center in January and were among 27 students representing the technical school at the statewide competition.
This marked Navarete’s (right) second trip to Hershey after finishing in the top five of last year’s statewide competition. “I think having done it before was a big advantage because I knew what to expect,” she said.
An aspiring graphic designer, Persinger’s pin design was of an outline of a firefly with many of the state’s iconography represented, especially in its three largest cities: Philadelphia, Pittsburgh and Harrisburg.
Navarrete, who plans to attend Point Park University for Advertising Design, had to complete a comprehensive application in 30 minutes, be interviewed for a fictitious job and turn in a detailed portfolio and resume.
“You really have to be confident in yourself, even though I was actually really nervous,” Navarrete said. “You have to breathe and think of it as a way to prepare yourself for your future, but I still can’t believe it.”
As a first place finisher at the statewide level, Navarrete has qualified for the national competition, June 24-28 in Louisville, Ky.
