STEM Design Challenge Winners
STEM Design Challenge WinnersThe fourth grade team of Garrett Waybright, Wesley Reagle, Eva Stotler and Maylin Penk recently earned Honorable Mention recognition at the STEM Design Challenge at Duquesne University.

Students spent months engaged in the design process to meet challenge requirements, which called for students to design a new, environmentally friendly home product.  Teams brainstormed ideas, narrowed down ideas to produce one design, built a model of the invention from K'Nex pieces, submitted a journal that tracked the design process, created a blueprint of the invention, and finally presented a “Shark Tank”-type pitch during the judging process.

The Deer Lakes foursome’s invention, called, "Up, Up, and Away,” is an escalating cabinet that keeps valuables, medications, or dangerous items out of reach of young children or others in the home.

Deer Lakes’ other two elementary teams’ inventions were a "Waste-Chaser," a hands-free dog waste collector; and the "GarBot," an autonomous robotic trash collector.
