Porco takes first place in regional National History Day competition; advances to states
Porco NHDDeer Lakes High School sophomore Pietro Porco took first place in the 2018 National History Day Regional Competition’s Senior Division, held at the Heinz History Center in the Strip District.

The win qualifies Porco for the statewide competition, which will be held May 11 and 12 at Carlisle (Pa.) High School.

This year's theme was Conflict & Compromise in History.  Porco’s entered the Historical Research Category: "Henry Clay: The Great Compromiser." Clay was a 19th century statesman and one of a handful of national leaders to actively work from 1811 to the 1850s, defining the issues, proposing nationalistic solutions, and creating the Whig Party.

The freshmen trio of Abigail and Katie Smagala and Jessica Windows, which dominated the junior division for the past three years, entered the Group Exhibit Category: "I Vote Yes" and was about Jeanette Rankin.  They did not advance this year but promise to be back next year.
