In October, a documentary film crew from Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture visited Deer Lakes schools for a few days to highlight the district’s farm-to-school programs.
Deer Lakes has been recognized as being among the most innovative food services departments in the entire commonwealth.
Food Services Director, Joe Beaman, who has spearheaded the initiative, explained Deer Lakes’ efforts to integrate fresh local foods into the school district’s food service program.
Beaman talked about several farm-to-school programs including local fresh programs and “Comfort Food Thursdays,” in which the school district partners with local farmers to provide unprocessed farm-to-school meals for our students.
The documentary crew included Celia Zizzi, Dave Pinskey, Derick Esch and Patrick Andrews.
