Deer Lakes shines at D2M2 showcase
In May, Deer Lakes was joined by area schools Woodland Hills, Shaler, Winchester Thurston, Carlynton, Mohawk, Sharpsville, Butler, Burrell and Northgate at the Design to Make a Difference showcase (D2M2) at Alloy 26 in Nova Place on the North Shore. That is the site of the former Allegheny Center Mall.
The eighth grade team of Fletcher Hammond, David Chizmar, Emile Wilcox & Greg Lawrence formed a project called the Lounging Lancer Company, which involved making an ergonomic chair out of a 3-D printer. One guest liked it enough to offer the students an opportunity to make one for his classroom.
Caden Taylor, a second grader at Curtisville Primary Center, made a huge impression on all of the local inventors and judges at the Design to Make a Difference (D2MD) showcase with his brilliant idea, “Big Kid Hanger” - a spring loaded pulley system for small people. Caden’s idea already has a preliminary patent and earned him the "Spark of Genius" award.
