Five Deer Lakes students honored at regional English festival
Deer Lakes High School juniors Mairead Clements, Nathan Duffy, Kelli Galbraith, Madison Madine and Pietro Porco were recently formally recognized at the 2018 Western Pennsylvania Council of Teachers of English (WPCTE) English Festival Luncheon, held at Seton-La Salle High School in Baldwin Township, Pa.

Teams composed of up to five students worked together throughout last school year to read and discuss six thematically-related texts selected by the WPCTE.  In addition to participating in Festival Day activities based upon these texts, students were also required to submit advanced individual and team work/projects prior to the festival.

The Deer Lakes students, who were awarded certificates and cash for their team’s performance, also earned a spot in the coveted winner’s circle after placing third out of more than 100 teams.  The quintet won its literary events in Insights, Talk Show, and Trivia.  Those three event wins plus bonus points for three first place finishes and points for an advanced team activity earned them nearly $300 in cash, which will be evenly divided among the teammates.

Deer Lakes, which has participated in the program for the past 18 years, sent seven high school and middle school teams to this year’s competition, which was held at Duquesne University in May.
