Penn State New Kensington’s COMETS (Courses On Math, Engineering, Technology, and Science) outreach program is designed to support and guide middle school-age students, particularly those in under-represented populations, as they develop impressions of their abilities in science, technology, engineering and math. In the past our program has been instrumental in sparking the interest of young women in particular. The COMETS program strives to show many different applications of STEM and promote diversity in STEM education. Our Saturday sessions are 1 hour in length on two consecutive Saturdays from 10:00-11:00 am. The first Saturday each month, students will be introduced to a guest speaker who is a local STEM professional and students will learn about what they do in their profession what sparked their interest in their field as well as how they got there and the education required. There will be demonstrations and activities that span both sessions to keep students engaged. Project boxes will be mailed to students with supplies for hands-on activities when activities require things that aren’t normal household items. Students will have the week to complete as many of the proposed activities that go along with the workshop and will be able to share their results and experience at the second monthly workshop. Field trips showcase STEM professionals in action and are a student favorite; these will also be virtual experiences.
Program registration is open through December 3, 2020 on the Penn State New Kensington website. Please use the following link: https://newkensington.psu.edu/comets-program. Our virtual Meet-N-Greet for registered students and their parents is Saturday, December 5th at 9:30 a.m. via Zoom.
