My name is Maria Myers, and I am a sixth grade ELA teacher at Deer Lakes Middle School. Prior to teaching at Deer Lakes, I taught in central Ohio where I lived after graduating from Ohio University with a Bachelor of Science in Education. While in Ohio, I taught third grade at the River Valley Local School District in Marion, Ohio. I also taught fifth and sixth-grade language arts in the Delaware City School District in Delaware, Ohio. In addition to my teaching experience, I have earned a Master of Education in the area of Curriculum and Instruction from Penn State University.
Originally from the Pittsburgh area, I grew up in Bradford Woods and am a graduate of the North Allegheny School District. After teaching for eleven years in Ohio, I returned to the Pittsburgh area with my husband and two daughters. We settled into a home in the Pine-Richland School District. I was ecstatic when I received the opportunity to teach language arts here in the Deer Lakes School District.
In sixth grade, reading and writing instruction is combined in an 80 minute class period. Reading and writing are essential skills for students in every subject. With the additional time and focus placed on ELA, I believe that students will progress to become more confident and independent readers and writers.
