Profile:

My name is Shelly Znosko and I will be teaching 3rd and 4th grade math, science, and social studies for the 2023 - 2024 school year at East Union Intermediate Center.   I look forward to everyone having a healthy and happy year.  I am excited to be your child's teacher!!

I began my career with the Deer Lakes School District in 2005 and served two years as the building substitute for the DLMS. Then in 2007, I was hired for my current teaching position and have enjoyed being a 3rd Grade teacher ever since! This year, the need provided the opportunity to teach a session of 4th grade and I am excited for this new venture into the 4th grade curriculum.

In both formal and voluntary settings, my educational experiences include teaching preschool through HS students. This diversity has been a true blessing in my teaching.  I am proud to say that I  graduated from Slippery Rock University with a Bachelor Degree in Elementary Education and a Master's Degree from Gannon University in Curriculum and Instructional Education.  As a life long learner, I continue to learn new and exciting ways to best teach my students!

My teaching philosophy is best summarized by a quote from Aristotle.  "Educating the mind without educating the heart is no education at all."    I hope that my students will not only gain a great education during their time with me, but build confidence and compassion under my guidance.

I am married to Kevin Znosko, who is a 5th Grade teacher at East Union Intermediate.  We live 15 minutes from the school and enjoy spending time with our families and friends.  During the summer, and when free time allows, I enjoy reading, scrapbooking, and quilting.  Although we do not have children of our own, we do have a very spoiled, gray stripped, tabby cat at home. His name is Jasper. He is a super sweet kitty and the students enjoy hearing about his adventures! We recently adopted two additional cats to round out our family!  Kisa, a black and orange striped tabby, and Joey, another gray and white tabby, were adopted from our local shelter and are just as sweet and spoiled as their kitty brother.

I'm so excited to start this year with all of you and I promise to make this a great 3rd or 4th grade year for your child!!

Assignments:

Our Weekly Update Newletter will be sent out every Friday!
Please check your Parent Square updates for the latest information!!

If a homework assignment is given, it should written in their assignment books.  Please check the assignment book each night.  Homework is due the day after it is assigned unless otherwise noted.  If a child misses a homework assignment,  he or she will need to complete the missing work during recess or to be taken home to complete and return the next day.

In math, I feel that students learn in many different ways. Students also all work at different speeds.  Some students will bring home more work than others depending on their understanding of the lessons. Practice of multiplication flashcards should be done nightly at home.  I do not assign much homework and never on Fridays!

Our grading for all subject areas are standards based.  This started back with the 2020-2021 school year.  Student assignments will show the number correct out of the number possible on their papers.

On the report card, for each of the subject categories, there will be a letter grade indicating your child's progress with each standard.  The letters you will see include M - Meets the standard, P- Progressing toward the standard, and N - Needs improvement. If your child is going above and beyond, your child may earn an E - Exceeding the standard.   DO NOT EXPECT YOUR CHILD TO EXCEED EVERY STANDARD!  The progression of learning and when topics will be introduced will vary throughout the year.  These levels are important in providing you a better understanding of where you student is in their educational journey.
