Deer Lakes 6th grader wins PA Supreme Court essay contest

Congratulations to Deer Lakes' Macy Plummer who recently was named the first-place winner in a Supreme Court of Pennsylvania writing contest.

"I've always thought that I was better at math and social studies and didn't like reading as much," Macy said. "But since I started doing these types of contests, I'm having fun reading. I don't care if I win or not because I enjoy it and I'm learning that I like reading more than I ever have. So, now I love school even more."

Macy, who is in 6th grade, wrote a one page essay about the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania's origins, importance and influence. The contest commemorated the court's 300th anniversary.

"The history of the court is really important," Macy said. "It was formed to be able to bring people together without too much fighting. It's really important to the nation's history."

Macy had one week to research the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania and write her essay.

"I knew it existed and that it was the highest court in Pennsylvania, but I had never looked into it deeper," Macy said. "I went to the Supreme Court's website to begin learning more and realized how interesting it was. I never knew how many levels of courts there are (in Pennsylvania) and how they all served a different purpose."
