Deer Lakes students earn state championship, qualify for nationals

Congratulations to Deer Lakes’ Melanie Brown and Ella Thomas who earned first place at States and will compete at Nationals with their National History Day project.
“I’m proud of myself and Melanie, especially because this was my first time trying this,” Ella said.
“Nine months of work paid off, so this feels really great,” Melanie added.
Melanie and Ella are the first ever Deer Lakes students to compete at Nationals, which are typically held in Washington, DC. The contest is being judged virtually this year.
“This a huge accomplishment, and I’m so excited for them,” Mrs. McQueen said. “It has generated a lot of excitement at the Middle School, so much so that kids are already interested in working on projects for the 2023 contest.”
For their project, Melanie and Ella made an exhibit on the 1790s National Bank debate between Alexander Hamilton and Thomas Jefferson. The pair could pick any topic related to the theme of Debate and Diplomacy: Successes, Failures and Consequences.
“We both liked learning about the creation of the United States and the Constitution,” Melanie said. “We liked the musical Hamilton and wanted to dive deeper into what he actually did.”
Melanie and Ella were interviewed by judges to explain their project.
The project will be submitted virtually for nationals and they will learn in June if they placed.
“It has been a lot of fun working together and learning more about something that we find interesting,” Ella added. “Hopefully we can be successful in nationals.”
Great work girls! #DLProud
