Deer Lakes seniors earns Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild award

Congratulations to Deer Lakes senior Sami Schomburg who recently won the Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild Art Show’s Dorothy Raizman Award and $500 in prize money in the Ceramics competition!

“Honestly, to have that kind of validation that your art means something to somebody is a really amazing feeling,” Sami said. “I’ve always doubted myself and what I’ve been able to create. This is concrete evidence that I’m here and the work I do is appreciated by people.”

In her first time participating in the MCG Art Show, Sami submitted four pieces to the virtual art gallery.

Sami’s winning piece was called “Baring Teeth,” which is now displayed in the art gallery.

The inspiration for the award-winning art was a mixture of Dungeons and Dragons, plus Abyssal Sea Life.

“I guess I’m kind of outing myself as a nerd,” Sami said laughing.

Sami plans take a gap year, earn her general education credits for two years at CCAC, and transfer her credits to the California University of Pennsylvania for a bachelor’s in fine arts. She wants to go into the arts and hopes to teach at a gallery like Manchester Craftsmen’s Guild.

“I found them in my sophomore year, and they have been truly irreplaceable to me,” Sami said. “Mrs. Culp has been irreplaceable to me, too. It’s honestly meant so much to me to have MCG and Mrs. Culp in my life. They’ve meant the world to me.” #DLProud
