Free PTC Summer Programs Offered to Deer Lakes Students

This is a friendly reminder about some of the incredible FREE opportunities Pittsburgh Technology College is offering for Deer Lakes Students who are interested in 2021 Summer Programs! 

CS Zero, Introductory Python, 5-hour workshop (CMU CS Academy lessons)

CS Zero, developed by CMU’s Computer Science Academy, introduces Python to middle schoolers. This 5-hour introduction to the CS Zero course is geared towards students who would like to give coding a try. Students will learn to write code that creates engaging graphics and simple animations. 

Python is the most widely-taught text-based programming language at the college level. In addition, Python is one of the most popular programming languages in industries and is used by Google, Amazon, and Facebook and it also forms the backend of Instagram, Spotify, Netflix, and more. 

Virtual free offering for students entering grades 6-8 

  • Session #1: June 21 – 25 (Monday-Friday)


OR

 

  • Session #2: June 28 – July 2 (Monday-Friday)

Time: 10:30-11:30 a.m. 

The instructor will also hold optional virtual “office hours” from 11:30 – 12:00 each day to provide additional help.

CS Zero, Introductory Python, 35-hour course (CMU CS Academy curriculum)

The CS Zero (CS0) course, developed by CMU’s CS Academy, teaches Python to middle schoolers. In this computer programming course students will learn to write code that creates engaging graphics and animations and they will grow their skills in problem-solving and creativity!

No prior coding experience is needed (but some experience with block-based coding such as Scratch may be helpful).

Virtual free offering for students entering  grades 7-9

  • Dates: Monday – Friday  June 21 – July 23 (synchronous (live) sessions: 24 weekdays – no class on Mon., July 5)

  • Time: 1:00 – 2:00 pm. 

The instructor will hold optional virtual “office hours” from 2:00 – 3:00 to provide help and answer questions.

Girls Who Code Club

Virtual free offering for students entering into grades 6-12 

Girls participate in 10 club meetings that include coding tutorials, career exploration, collaboration, and more.. We would like to run this virtual session the week of June 14 from 9:00-11:00 if we have enough students interested in participating.  

Students who are interested will need to email Mrs. Bobbi-Ann Barnes, Assistant Superintendent
at [email protected] by (Monday, May 3, 2021) to determine if we have enough students to offer this course.
