East Union student writes award-winning poem

Congratulations to Samantha Steele who recently wrote an award-winning poem!

Samantha, who is in fourth grade, wrote and read the poem for the Ingomar Garden Club, which held several contests for local students of all ages.

"I really like writing poems and I'm probably better at writing poems than anything else I could have tried, like drawing," Samantha said.

Samantha said the message in her poem was for people to explore, observe and enjoy the outdoor environment more often.

For her award-winning poem, Samantha earned a certificate and a small cash prize.

"I'm glad they liked it," Samantha said. "I've never really won anything so it felt different to me. It felt really good."

Her Poem is below:

The Things You See

The tweet, tweet of the baby birds hatching is a sound that I like to hear.
While a fawn stumbling to find its way to a site so dear.
When flowers bloom in the Spring
It makes the mouth sing.
The blue of the blue birds
Wing flies in the sky so high.
