DLMS team qualifies for statewide National History Day competition

The Deer Lakes Middle School tandem of Isabella Bolduc and Alyssa Weber placed third in the Junior Group Exhibit division at the regional National History Day competition at the Heinz History Center in the Strip District.  That qualifies the sixth graders for the statewide competition in Harrisburg in May.

This year's theme was Conflict & Compromise in History.  Deer Lakes’ winning exhibit focused on conflict between a group of businessmen and sugar planters in favor of US annexation versus Hawaii's monarchy.  The resultant conflict forced Queen Liliuokalani to abdicate the throne and paved the way for the United States’ annexation and eventual admission of Hawaii as the 50th state in the union.
