Staff Spotlight: Getting to know Mrs. Hedglin

What do you teach at Deer Lakes?
I am the life skills teacher for grades 3,4, and 5 at East Union Intermediate Center.

When did you know you wanted to be in education?
Being the oldest of 5 children had a lot to do with wanting to get into education. My entire childhood I was around children and then I watched them grow into adults. At the elementary level, teachers help foster their students' curiosity and our impact goes beyond the classroom. I get to have students in class or see them in the hallways then hear about all the great things they accomplish later in life.

What do you enjoy about your students?
Students in my classroom have a variety of needs but they all come with an eagerness to learn. It is my job then to provide them with multiple ways of instruction. My job isn't only teaching them how to read but also setting the foundation for self-worth and confidence. Reading and math are very important but what is equally as important is giving students the skills they need to become successful adults and to know they have a purpose in life.
