The Title I Reading Program is supplemental reading instruction for students in grades K-5 who may need extra support. Title I does not take the place of the regular classroom reading curriculum.
Title I students receive services several times per week. This instruction is provided in the Title I Reading classroom and in the regular reading classroom.
Emphasis is placed on the development of phonics, phonemic awareness, comprehension, vocabulary, and fluency. Students will encounter a variety of curriculum-based materials as well as quality children’s literature in the program.
Who is Eligible?
For a student to become eligible for Title I reading services, multiple criteria is collected and reviewed. The Deer Lakes School District administers a number of standardized achievement assessments to all students each year. These assessments include the Dynamic Indicators of Basic Early Literacy (DIBELS), the PSSA tests, and other reading assessments. Based upon these test results, teacher recommendation, and current reading grades, students may be eligible to receive Title I reading services.
