My name is Terry Grantz and I am an English teacher at Deer Lakes High School. Prior to being hired at Deer Lakes in 1999, I earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in English with an emphasis in in both Communication Arts/Electronic Media and Secondary Education from Waynesburg College. Following graduation I taught one year at Avonworth Jr./Sr. High School while taking graduate courses at the University of Pittsburgh. Shortly after I started at Deer Lakes, I earned a Master of Science degree in Business Education from Robert Morris University.
While I truly enjoy the ELA curriculum content, I understand that not every student wants to become a literary scholar. However, I do believe that the lessons students learn in the English classroom involve skills that can be applied to any discipline or path they may choose. The ability to analyze and then synthesize the information is an invaluable skill that will be necessary as they progress through school and life. Although my classes focus on building reading, writing and speaking skills, most importantly I want my students to become better thinkers.
When I am not in the classroom I try to spend as much time as possible near the water. My wife and I enjoy boating on the Three Rivers and traveling to the beaches and blue waters of Florida and the Carribean. When we are not floating on the Allegheny, we reside in Shaler Township.
